Impact Stories

Ama was born to a single, teenage mother and raised by her grandmother. Denied any chance for a formal education, Ama was forced into sex slavery in Gabon (neighboring country south of Cameroon).
During her time of sexual slavery, she was also forced to wash dishes in a local restaurant and pickpockets simply to survive. To add to this tragedy, when there were no clients, she was routinely raped and assaulted by her trafficker. For over 4 years this was her life.
After stealing from an influential sex buyer, both Ama and her slaver were forced to flee local authorities in Gabon. They managed to escape back to Cameroon after weeks of traveling through rough and dangerous bush roads. When Ama’s grandmother heard of the young girl’s plight, she contacted the Cameroonian police for help. The Cameroonian police, in turn, reached out to GLOWA to help provide proper care and support to Ama (now infected with HIV as a result of her sexual slavery in Gabon).
GLOWA compassionately responded, covering the bills for Ama’s medical testing and providing legal support for her court problems. Additionally, GLOWA started a “vegetable business” for Ama to help provide her with a means of self-support. Unfortunately, Ama’s health is quite fragile and she frequently loses many workdays each month, resulting in both lost goods and lost income. To that end, GLOWA helps Ama restock lost inventory.
Today Ama is…??
Like Ama, many survivors of human trafficking are extremely fragile and require sustained long-term support to successfully break away from their traffickers and stabilize their lives.
GLOWA needs your help in continuing to support Ama and other survivors of modern slavery to acquire formal education and develop the hard and soft skills vital to building a better life.
